Discocactus sp.

 

On this page you will find information about plants that are not yet described, or that are not described to a species to our knowledge.

However, we do record these plants to give the amateur/collector further insight in the plants that are incirculation.

We do know that there are names in circulation that belong to the so called invalid names. (see field numbers). If there are plants in your collection, that are not mentioned in this homepage, then we would kindly ask you to inform us about this. Preferably by way of e-mail, documented with pictures etc.    

We do not claim completeness, but try to approximate it.

From incidents in the past we know that seed companies try to offer new species ever more. Often they mention in their catalogues fantasy names and new field numbers. But in most cases these higher field numbers are the same as that species that were collected and described before. Really new species are hard to find.

But if a new species is found, then we would like to receive further information. We are also interested in additional information about habitat and habitat photo's of the species that were described most recently. Until now it was not possible to receive better information by way of the usual canals, as was the case with the latest species of Dr. P Braun, E. Esteves and Prof. Dr. Diers.

• Short plant description

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 9 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium 6 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is gray/green. 
Number of ribs is 10. 
Number of areoles per rib is 5 to 6 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round. 
The number of radial spines is 5. 
The length of the 2 spines upwards is 0.5 cm,  the spines side- and downwards up to 2.5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is slightly recurved and the colour is cream/white. 
The colour of the cephalium is cream . 
The colour of the fruit is white. 
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

We don't know the exact habitat in Mato Grosso, Brazil

• Short plantdescription

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 10 cm. Plant height without cephalium is 7 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is dark green. 
Number of ribs is 10. 
The number of areoles per rib is 5 to 7. 
The shape of the areoles is oval. 
The number of radial spines is 7. 
The length of the spines upwards is 0.5 cm. , the spines sidewards up to 2 cm and the one downwards is up to 3 cm.
The shape of the spines is slightly bent to the plant, and the colour is light brown with a dark tip.

• Habitat

This species from Minas Gerais, Brazil, is as far as we know not described.

• Short plant description

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 8 cm. Plant height without cephalium 5 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is green. 
Number of ribs 14. 
Number of areoles per rib is 5 on plants without  cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round.
The number of radial spines is 5. 
The length of the two spines upwards is 0.5 cm., of the spines side- and downwards 1.5 cm.
The shape of the spines is recurved backwards to the plant and the colour is gray. The young spines are red with a black tip.

• Remarks

This plant is never described with the name D. serrensis and is also a nomen inval.  Dr. P. Braun means it is a var. of  D. placentiformis.

• Short plant description

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 7 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium 4 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is green. 
Number of ribs is 11. The number of areoles per rib is 7 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is oval to round. 
The number of spines is 5, the length is ca. 1,4 cm. 
The shape of the spines is bent to the plant. The spines are  goldlike. 
The colour of the cephalium is cream. 
The colour of the fruit is white. 
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

• Remarks 

This plant came from the firm Gebr. de Herdt in Belgium with the name "Rio Aqua Limpa".   

As far as we know this plant is the same as the species D. subterranea proliferans E 12.

• Short plant description

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 13 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium 7 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is bronze/green. 
Number of ribs 15. 
Number of areoles per rib is 5 to 7 on plants with  cephalium. The shape of the areoles is oval. 
The number of radial spines is 7 to 8. 
De length of the two spines upwards is 1 cm., the spines side- and downwards are up to 3.5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is slightly recurved backwards to the plant and the colour is gray. 
The colour of the cephalium is cream/white. 
The position of the stigma is half-way up the secondary stamens.

• Remarks

The plants are originally from the firm Gebr. De Herdt, Belgium. We don't know a field number. 
Dr. P. Braun means it's probable the same as D. subviridigriseus.

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 7 cm.  Plant height without cephalium 6 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is gray/green. 
Number of ribs is 10.
Number of areoles per rib is 5 to 6 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round.
The number of radial spines is 6 to 7. 
The length of the spines is 0.5 cm for two spines upwards, the spines sidewards are ca. 2 cm. and the one downwards is up to 3 cm.
The shape of the spines is slightly bent to the plant and the colour is light gray with a dark tip.
The colour of the cephalium is white.

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 7 cm. Plant height without  cephalium 4,5 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is green. 
Number of ribs 10. 
Number of areoles  per rib is 4. The shape of the areoles is round. The number of radial spines is 6. 
De length of the spines is up to 2,5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is straight, slightly bent to the plant. The colour is brown.

• Remarks

This plant is too young to compare with other species to know the real  species.
