We made a study of the culture plants of 3 different field numbers: 81-105, HU603 and E84

Discocactus crystallophilus

  • Description

  • Short plant description 81-105 in culture

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 5 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium is 3 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is dark green. 
Number of ribs is 6 to 7.
Number of areoles per rib is 4 to 6 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round. 
The number of radial spines is 3 to 5. The length of the spine downwards is 3 cm. The spines sidewards are 2 cm. The little spines upwards are 0.5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is slightly recurved  backwards and the colour is light brown to pale gray. 
The colour of the cephalium is white. 
The colour of the fruit is white. 
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

  • Remarks

This variety is mostly known as  the 'Curvelo'-type, named after the village in the habitat of the plant.

Near Augusto de Lima  ca. 22 km beyond Corinto in the direction of Montes Claros growing in loamy and  rocky soil.

  • Short plant description HU603 in culture

Diameter of the culture plant ca 11 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium 7 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is green. 
Number of ribs15. 
Number areoles per rib is 5 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is oval.
The number of radial spines is mostly 3. 
The length of the spines is 1.5 cm. for the 2 spines sidewards and 3 cm. for the spine downwards. 
The shape of the spines is slightly recurved to the plant,  the colour is grayish.
The colour of the cephalium is pale brown/gray. 
The colour of the fruit is white.
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

This culture plant is in originally part of the collection of Ronald de Zeeuw,  Gouda, Holland.

          The seeds came from Fa. Köhres, Germany. (ca.1985)

Plant height without  cephalium is 7 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is dark green. 
Number of ribs 11. 
Number of areoles per rib is 5 to 7 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round. 
The number of radial spines 5 to 6. 
The length of the spines is 0,5 to 2,5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is slightly bent to the plant and the colour is light gray. 
The colour of the cephalium is gray/white. 
The colour of the fruit is yellow/white. 
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

  • Remarks

E84 is probably the same as the type plant. HU582
